The Top 5 Mistakes People Make When Getting Fake IDs (And How to Avoid Them)
Each year, dozens of people successfully (and unsuccessfully) use fake IDs to get into various bars, clubs, and other places of age-restricted recreation. But for some, just getting in past the front door can be a challenge in itself.
Unfortunately, there’s no school out there on using a fake ID. It’s something that comes with trial and error. This often leads to some common mistakes that people end up making when they get their fake ID.
To help you navigate this, we’ve listed some of the top five mistakes that are likely made when using fake IDs and how you can avoid them. We won’t charge you a dime for sharing these secrets.
1 – Using a Fake Name on the ID
When a lot of people get their fake ID for the first time, they’re a little hesitant about using their fake name. A lot people think that the natural thing to do is to have a fake name on their fake ID.
This is so they can avoid trouble if they get caught or just generally to make them feel a little more comfortable.
Bouncers are quick to catch on to this little scheme because they’re well aware that people tend to do this kind of thing. They’ll easily catch you in the act if you use a fake ID with a fake name.
Usually all it takes for them to do this is to ask for another piece of ID that isn’t the one you’re showing them. It can be anything like a student ID, a credit card, or even a library card. And if the name doesn’t match what it says on your fake ID, then this is a big red flag for them to stop you dead in your tracks.
Instead of getting caught up in using a fake name based on the fear that you might get caught, it’s just better to use your real name. Chances are, if you do get caught, you’ll have your real name revealed anyway.
Adding a real name to your fake ID adds credibility because it signals to the bouncer that your info might not be as fake as they think it to be.
Some people use their Social Security Card to back their counterfeit license. There are fake name generating applications available on Android phones.
Most people would use these to generate fake information for their IDs which is not wise. The accuracy of these apps has always been in doubt.
After all, the only thing fake about your ID should be your age, not your existence. It’s something that can be very easily backed up by any other source of legitimate identification like your credit card.
2 – Trying to Hide in a Crowd of People
As someone using a fake ID to get into a club, you might’ve thought about trying to increase your odds of getting in. For some, the idea is that they can skate by the bouncer if they can lower his level of attentiveness.
As a result, they try to sneak themselves in a crowd of legitimate customers in the hopes that they won’t be singled out from the group.
Bouncers gain a ton of insight and experience on the job. They know when someone is trying to hide something that they shouldn’t. Even if you’re extremely careful in your approach, you can be found out easily.
The first thing a bouncer will notice is someone that looks underage trying to blend in a big crowd of people. It’s always obvious and you can never do it without being undetected.
More importantly, when you go through a bouncer, they will take their time to inspect your ID before letting you in. This is a part of their job.
That’s why you can’t just expect them to gloss over your fake ID for just a moment just because there’s a bigger crowd than expected.
Trying to hide will never actually work in real life situations. That’s why it’s often just better to face the bouncer head on. You want to walk up to them just like anyone else and show them you’re ID.
If you just go straight ahead without any hesitation, it’ll be much easier for the bouncer to accept that you’re just another customer.
They’re less likely to suspect you right off the bat and this gives you incentive when you’re trying to make sure that the bouncer isn’t paying too much special attention towards you.
3 – Giving Up Too Easily
Using a bogus license in front of a bouncer often means that there is a chance that you will be rejected. And while you hope that you can fool the bouncer easily enough, this is not always a guarantee.
So when the inevitable happens and you get caught, you might be tempted to just run off and escape so you won’t have to face any repercussions. You can also read our ‘What Happens If you Get Caught Using a Fake ID‘ guide on our exclusive Resources section for further information.
Why it doesn’t Work:
Although escaping might sound ideal when you’ve been caught, it’s not always the best solution. Even with the latest technology or years of experience, Bartenders won’t be a 100% accurate when they suspect you of using a fake ID.
There are countless cases out there of actual legitimate IDs being flagged as fake. This happens because bouncers work off a set of assumptions.
These are assumptions about the user’s behavior, about the ID’s looks, about whether or not it feels real to the touch, and their gut feelings.
As you can imagine, they’re not always accurate. So when they happen to people with real IDs, they argue back at the bouncer and assert their rights.
When this happens, a bouncer is likely to rethink their assumptions to find out if the case if valid or not.
However, when you back off immediately as a fake ID user, it confirms their suspicions completely. They can then double down on their assumptions and either tell you to go away or call the cops on you.
What to do Instead:
When you use a counterfeit document, you assume that you don’t have the privilege of refuting the bouncer’s claim. But someone that uses a legitimate ID doesn’t have this problem. So while you know that you’re a fraud user, the bouncer likely doesn’t.
Instead of backing out right away at the slightest suspicion, you want to be able to stand your ground. Act like your ID is real and that it shouldn’t be called into question. Insist on your ID’s authenticity and fire back at their claim.
The worst they can do is to not believe you and threaten to call the cops. When that happens, you can safely leave before the situation gets escalated. But it’s still better than shying away from the situation at the first confrontation.
4 – Coming Up with Elaborate Cover Stories
Presenting a counterfeit ID to a bouncer is always a gamble that can result in a disaster. Most people try to remedy this by covering up the inconsistencies of their fake ID by making up a story.
This is a reaction to wanting to have a response for every question and every doubt that the bouncer has. After all, you don’t want to be caught speechless, right?
Bouncers are equipped with same lie detector senses that a teacher has when you don’t complete an assignment or what your employer might have when you come in late to work.
Years of dealing with customers both old and young has hardened them to the possible deviations that a person has with their case.
So when you walk up to them with an elaborate story to explain why things don’t seem in order, they’re always sharp on the take. They can fish out how likely your story is and what you’re trying to hide.
Coming up with an answer for everything is the first thing that they’ll catch on to. After that, it will just be a case of trying to explore the most likely scenario and trapping you in your own lie.
Instead of concocting the most fool proof story that you can think of, you want to take a few steps back. The logical thing to do in most cases is to think of what the average person would do.
A lot of the time, the reasons that ordinary people have for a mistake are fairly mundane. They don’t have an entire story to back up why something seems off. Instead it’s usually something so boring and typical that no one would doubt it.
So while you might have the urge to come with a tall tale, it’s usually just better to dial it back. Sometimes even feigning ignorance can work because it tells the bouncer that you aren’t thinking too much about it and it’s likely a mistake from whoever issued the ID.
5 – Getting a Fake ID That’s out of State
One of the most common things that people tend to do when getting their ID made is to put a different state on their fake ID. The reasons are usually something as simple as wanting not to arouse any suspicion.
You’re banking off the fact that the bouncer might not be as familiar with the minor details of an ID that’s from another state and that this might be your ticket in.
While on paper, the idea of using an out of state ID to fool the bouncer might sound right it’s never the case in reality.
Sure, a bouncer seeing an out of state ID for the first time might get fooled. But after seeing dozens of them over the years, they’re more than likely to spot them immediately.
Even if they don’t have the expertise to catch them, sometimes all it takes is a little common sense. If a rural town in the middle of nowhere starts getting college students all with out of state IDs during spring break, that’s usually more than enough of an indication of something suspicious going on.
Anything from geographical disparities to whether or not you look or sound like you’re from the state you claim to be can be enough to fish you out as a potential fake ID user.
Instead of going with the obvious bit of making an out of state ID, you want to do something a bit more believable.
Avoid anything that sounds too far-fetched to be true or something that you might have to spend a lot of time and effort to prove. Instead, just go for something that sounds like the most likely to be the case.
This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to make an ID from the state you’re actually from. It can be a state that you’ve lived in for a long time or are more familiar with. It can even be a state that neighbors the one you want to use it in.
You can even use a state that’s bit further away. As long as you memorize a few details about the state in a way that might prove you’re from there, you’re golden.
For example, you might want to memorize the name of a local school that you can say you studied at or an eatery that you might have frequented.
Just make sure you don’t get your ID made for state that’s on the opposite side of the country. It’ll be the first thing that bouncer picks up, and it’ll almost never end well.
